  • Welcome!

Welcome to the Cavanagh Photography :)

My name is Adam and I am a photographer based in Sydney, Australia. With the help of my lovely wife, Kim, we run the boutique studio called Cavanagh Photography. Our specialty is shooting sexy, edgy and chic wedding and portrait photography for some of the coolest people in the world ;)

On this blog you’ll find me posting about images I’ve taken, whether they’re from weddings we've shot, engagement shoots we've done, places we've travelled, or simply wherever I’ve taken my camera. It follows both our personal and professional life and is pretty informal in it's design. This blog is a great information source for my current and potential clients and should tell you all a bit more about us. And I hope it can also be a source of inspiration for other photographers who are looking at pushing themselves to continually improve.

Thank you so much for taking the time to look at my work and please don’t hesitate to write a comment to let me know you’ve dropped by. Cheers!

Vicky & Paul Wedding | St Mary’s Catholic Church North Sydney | Waters Edge

Looking through the viewfinder of my camera, I got a lump in my throat. And this happened numerous times on Vicky and Paul’s wedding day. While documenting their day, the love of family and friends really shone through. And this was just beautiful and was a pleasure to be apart of.

We met up with Abraham Joffee’s crew and joined the groom Paul and his groomsmen for some fishing on the harbour. Not your typical groom preparation, but we just loved it! What a way to start the day! From there we went to the girls place where Vicky and her family were getting ready… and she has a big family lol. The ceremony was held at St Mary’s Catholic Church in North Sydney which is a gorgeous church located just opposite North Sydney Oval.

The reception was held at Waters Edge, where they really celebrated the evening. Vicky is of Lebanese heritage and one thing I love about the Lebanese culture is how they celebrate the wedding day. Once the bridal party is announced into the room there is dancing immediately with drums and traditional music and it is such a wonderful way to start the evening and gets the guests into the mood and celebration.

Vicky and Paul, it was truly a pleasure and a wonderful experience to document your wedding day. Thank you! Have a great honeymoon and Vicky say hi to your Mum from us:)

Tafline

We recently had the pleasure of shooting the maternity session of English Mum, Tafline. She was so relaxed and fun during the shoot which is the best way to be. The more relaxed you are, the better the photos will turn out as no one likes to see themselves looking stiff and awkward.

Morning Mist

We don’t normally get up early in the morning as we are more like night owls. But I thought I’d share a photo we took on a freezing winters morning. We woke up just before 6am to this glorious sight. It made me want to get up for more winter sunrises… it was just beautiful, still and timeless… but then I saw the ice all over our car windows and the blue colour in my fingertips.

Yvonne & Alex Brisbane Bridal | Brisbane Wedding Photographer

Here is the Bridal shoot that we recently did with Yvonne & Alex in beautiful sunny Brisbane… well there were actually storms and floods in the city the day before, but it fined up for us. We shot their wedding earlier this year in Sydney, which you can check out here. They now live in Brisbane and we were so excited to catch up with them again and shoot around their new hometown.

Scouting

This week we’ve been very busy meeting some wonderful couples and also scouting weddings. One thing we always do a couple of weeks before each wedding, is to scout out locations and also do a bit of a run through of the day. We are always looking for something a little different at each place. But I should say, that with us, the wedding photography locations are totally up to the couple. It’s their wedding and we in no way would want to dictate their wedding day to them.

So here are a some of tips for couples when deciding on wedding photography locations for their wedding:

  • Choose two or three possible locations and go visit each of them yourselves. It’s your wedding day so scout it out and see if you like it. You may not know exactly what makes a great location, but I’m sure you will know what you like and what you don’t like. You may not do all the locations on your wedding day, but at least you have options up your sleeve.
  • Try to choose locations that are in between your wedding ceremony location and your wedding reception venue. You don’t want to spend your day in the car traveling, so choose areas that are on the way. And make the most of your time.
  • Factor ‘travel time’ into your itinerary. You may think you have 2 hours for location photography. But if it takes 30mins to get there and 30 mins to get to the reception, then you only really  have 60 mins.
  • The first place most people think of is ‘The Rocks’ or ‘Argyle Stairs’ but there are so many other wonderful locations in Sydney and unless you are having your wedding around the Rocks area you can find you go out of your way to queue with lots of other brides (we’ve seen 5+!) for a staircase shot. Go a little further into the city and you can get lots of awesome shots and it’s a little less crowded;)
  • Parks and beaches are always great for wedding photography, but just check to see if any photography or wedding permits are required. The easiest way to find out, is to just “Google” the location and find their website.
  • Use ‘google maps’ to assist in finding potential locations. It’s a fantastic tool.
  • We are also happy to offer some suggestions:)

If anyone has any other tips they would like to share, feel free to leave a comment below. And I couldn’t do a post without a photo… so here is a photo of my beautiful wife Kim while we were out scouting a wedding.
