Scouting

This week we’ve been very busy meeting some wonderful couples and also scouting weddings. One thing we always do a couple of weeks before each wedding, is to scout out locations and also do a bit of a run through of the day. We are always looking for something a little different at each place. But I should say, that with us, the wedding photography locations are totally up to the couple. It’s their wedding and we in no way would want to dictate their wedding day to them.

So here are a some of tips for couples when deciding on wedding photography locations for their wedding:

  • Choose two or three possible locations and go visit each of them yourselves. It’s your wedding day so scout it out and see if you like it. You may not know exactly what makes a great location, but I’m sure you will know what you like and what you don’t like. You may not do all the locations on your wedding day, but at least you have options up your sleeve.
  • Try to choose locations that are in between your wedding ceremony location and your wedding reception venue. You don’t want to spend your day in the car traveling, so choose areas that are on the way. And make the most of your time.
  • Factor ‘travel time’ into your itinerary. You may think you have 2 hours for location photography. But if it takes 30mins to get there and 30 mins to get to the reception, then you only really  have 60 mins.
  • The first place most people think of is ‘The Rocks’ or ‘Argyle Stairs’ but there are so many other wonderful locations in Sydney and unless you are having your wedding around the Rocks area you can find you go out of your way to queue with lots of other brides (we’ve seen 5+!) for a staircase shot. Go a little further into the city and you can get lots of awesome shots and it’s a little less crowded 😉
  • Parks and beaches are always great for wedding photography, but just check to see if any photography or wedding permits are required. The easiest way to find out, is to just “Google” the location and find their website.
  • Use ‘google maps’ to assist in finding potential locations. It’s a fantastic tool.
  • We are also happy to offer some suggestions 🙂

If anyone has any other tips they would like to share, feel free to leave a comment below. And I couldn’t do a post without a photo… so here is a photo of my beautiful wife Kim while we were out scouting a wedding.
